An Ounce of Prevention, a Pound of Cure: The Best Curing Techniques for HempDecember 4th, 2018
Now that the fall harvest has occurred here in Southern Oregon, there’s still plenty of work to be done. In fact, what many people, including some growers, don’t realize is that what you do after the hemp is grown can be just as crucial as the what you do while it’s growing. At Innovative Separations, we’re not just your trusted source to buy CBD isolate in bulk. We also provide our customers with valuable tips and information on this life-changing treatment.
Let’s take a look at some of the best curing techniques for hemp, how they affect it, and what it all means for you:
Slow and Steady Wins the Race
For high-grade flowers, the best curing technique is a slow process, consisting of a steady temperature of 69 degrees Fahrenheit, and at a relative humidity of 69%. This process requires a dark curing area and significant airflow to ensure its success.
Buds are hung on the stalk, and very few leaves are removed. This is to allow the sugars and other elements to go back into the flowers. With a curing time of approximately ten days, this method leads to a smoother smoke for the patients and a more enjoyable all-around CBD experience.
The Deep Freeze
Any hemp that is to be processed for terpenes requires an entirely different approach to that of flowers. In order to preserve the precious terpene content, as well as water content, the hemp is flash frozen to maintain the flavor and effectiveness of the terpenes. In fact, without flash-freezing the hemp at this stage, terpene profiles have a tendency to degrade rapidly, leading to a reduction in aroma and taste.
Since most plants contain their CBD in the acid form of carboxylic acid, they need to be processed to convert them to their total potential. This refers to a process known as decarboxylation, where the active compounds that lie within the plant are activated. This typically occurs by heating, and can be an essential part of processing hemp for medical uses.
